We all know that we need to be more active and exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle. But, if you are like me and the idea of jogging laps around my neighborhood or walking on a treadmill going nowhere for hours seems pretty boring, you should consider Roller skating or In line skating. Not only is it is fun activity, but there are many benefits of choosing roller skating as part of your fitness program.
Skating provides a complete aerobic workout that involves all of the body's muscles especially the heart and is the equivalent to jogging in terms of health benefits. The American Heart Association recognizes roller skating as an aerobic activity. It aids in the reduction of body fat and leg strength improvement and can sometimes be easier on the joints than jogging can be. A study done at the University of Massachusetts found that In-line skating & Roller skating causes less then 50% of the impact shock to joints compared to running.
Roller / In-line skating is also a great way to burn the calories. One hour of moderate (notice I didn't say killing yourself, but moderate) roller skating can burn 330 calories on average in a 143 pound person. If that same person skates vigorously, he/she will burn up to 590 calories per hour. For the average person skating at 6 mph, he/she will burn about 350 calories per hour while skating at 10 mph will burn up to 600 per hour. Not too bad!
Fun for the whole family!!
Not only is roller skating fun, but this is also an exercise activity that can be enjoyed by the whole family. It's a little hard to fit more than one person on a treadmill but all your family members can fit on skating rink, local park or on a nice bike/skating path. Not only will you be benefiting yourself by participating in this aerobic activity, but you will be setting a good example for your children to get out there and get active too.
